2023

When the CSCC took some cars to race at Daytona in 2003, Barry Sumner was campaigning his other two race Morgans and was still working to get Black Sheep race-length reliable. Although interested in the idea, he was not at that time ready for the trip.

In 2023, as part of their 20th Anniversary, the Classic Sports Car Club arranged a trip to Daytona and Sebring in Florida, USA. Barry Sumner and Jack Bellinger decided to seize the opportunity and took Black Sheep, Barry’s slightly modified 1953 +4, to race at Daytona and Sebring. Barry’s son Ian and Jack were to drive and Barry took on the roles of Team Manager and pit crew.

Unfortunately, Black Sheep only did a few laps of Daytona before the engine decided to smoke so the team decided to scratch

but are now organising their trip for 2024.

Team Black Sheep are philosophical about the outcome of 2023 and say that many lessons were learnt that will stand them in good stead for the 2024 adventure.

2023 memories
40 Years of Morgan Racing

The UK Morgan Challenge celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2024. Barry and Jack have raced in the Challenge from the beginning and so a trip to Daytona and Sebring with Black Sheep is an ideal way to celebrate  40 years of Morgan Racing. The first Sebring 12-hour race took place in 1952, with a Morgan +4 winning its class. The race number of that car was 7 and Black Sheep will hopefully also carry number 7 in 2024 to commemorate that event. A Morgan also took part in 1953.

The more the merrier!

Team Sumner / Black Sheep, aided and abetted by the Bellinger family, will be back out in the Morgan Challenge at selected events as they gear up for another transatlantic crossing. Come and find us in the paddock if you want to join us and show them what Morgan racing is about.

As our good friend, Plus 4 racer and proud Texan, the late Frank McLain would say:  "Lets blow their doors off!"’
